System design influences behaviour by definition; the design of scholarly communication also influences science. Issues pertaining to selective publication, reproducibility, accountability, preservation, and exclusivity are caused by the limitations of the paper-based design of scholarly communication and threaten its sustainability. With decentralization initiatives for the Web, the time for a redesign of science is now and can make progress on many of the aforementioned issues. I showcase initial work on designing infrastructure for a global, inclusive, decentralized scholarly commons.
