Inspired by open source software, the open source hardware community has often struggled with the complex licensing landscape surrounding hardware. Copyright licenses alone cannot fully cover hardware because copyright law protects hardware in inconsistent and sometimes unpredictable ways. The Open Source Hardware Association has developed a certification program intended to help fill the gaps. The certification program guides creators through licensing decisions and provides an alternative way to quickly check if hardware has been effectively added to the commons.
